The North East Neighbourhood House Networks Greener Houses Growing Greener Neighbourhoods project is designed to develop Neighbourhood Houses as demonstration centres to showcase the principles and operation of low energy and water use design features, technologies and appliances in family homes.

Greener Houses Growing Greener Neighbourhoods is a pilot program, to be run in 5 neighbourhood Houses in Melbourne’s the North Eastern suburbs. It has 16 partner organisations: 5 Local Government Authorities, 6 Neighbourhood Houses, the Association of Neighbourhood Houses and Learning Centres, the Centre for Design at RMIT University, the Moreland Energy Foundation and Melbourne University. The partnership is lead by the North East Neighbourhood House Network.

The project is a unique collaboration involving the community, industry, community organisations and the three tiers of Government in assisting families to improve the environmental performance of their homes.

Greener Houses will ‘retrofit’ four Neighbourhood Houses and build one new Learning Centre to create five eco-demonstration houses. Local volunteers will plan the environmental make-over of each of the Neighbourhood Houses and will run on-going, accessible, community information and learning, to help families in the local community make their own homes more eco-friendly.
Greener Houses will develop trial and evaluate a comprehensive package of learning and training resources. It will also produce a package of training resources; provide the data on outcomes of Community facilities as demonstration eco-living centres as well as the costings for retrofitting community facilities.

Greener Houses incorporates documentation and evaluation of both the environmental performance of the Neighbourhood House buildings before and after the ‘retrofit’ and the effectiveness of the Community Information and Learning program, including the volunteer recruitment, training and ongoing participation of volunteers, as well as community engagement, information and learning activities.

The comprehensive documentation and evaluation processes are designed so that Greener Houses can readily be extended across Australia and used by other municipalities and communities.

Following the pilot project, it is envisaged that the approach will be rolled out to other Neighbourhood Houses and Community Centres not only in Victoria but in other States as well.
